Few people, whether children, teens, or adults, like to go to a doctor or other health care professional. But, when you are sick, you sure want someone there to help you feel better quickly! That's why Health Centers in Schools' staff is there at the schools where children are--to keep students healthy and get them back to class so they are ready to learn.

Depending on the school, HCS professionals may provide primary preventive care, immunizations, chronic disease care, mental health counseling, and vision and hearing screening. HCS currently operates 7 school-based health centers and manages the school nurse program at East Baton Rouge (EBR) Parish and Recovery School District public schools.

The student's grade level and the time of year also determine program availability. For students to participate in any health service at school, parental consent is required.

Programs and services that HCS provides include:
  • Louisiana Smiles Sealant Program(select schools)
  • Free vision exams and eyeglasses
  • Health education
  • Blood pressure & temperature checks
  • At Health Centers only: Sports/ Comprehensive physicals, Routine immunizations and vaccination record verification, Medication administration, Behavior counseling

Student Alliance Council

The mission of Health Centers in Schools is keeping students healthy so they can stay in school and learn. HCS assists in the mission of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital by sharing our team members’ gifts of spirit and healing to keep students healthy. The Student Alliance Council, coordinated by Health Centers in Schools, is made up of student representatives from East Baton Rouge Parish public high schools. The goal of the HCS SAC is to advise in decision-making, provide feedback on services, and advocate as student health leaders in East Baton Rouge Parish Schools to assist in the fulfillment of both the HCS and the OLOLCH missions.

If you are a student in 9th or 10th grade and interested in being on the SAC, please contact your school nurse or health center.
