Few people, whether children, teens, or adults, like to go to a doctor or other health care professional. But, when you are sick, you sure want someone there to help you feel better quickly! That's why Health Centers in Schools' staff is there at the schools where children are--to keep students healthy and get them back to class so they are ready to learn.

Depending on the school, HCS professionals may provide primary preventive care, immunizations, chronic disease care, mental health counseling, and vision and hearing screening. HCS currently operates 11 school-based health centers and manages the school nurse program at East Baton Rouge (EBR) Parish and Recovery School District public schools.

The student's grade level and the time of year also determine program availability. For students to participate in any health service at school, parental consent is required.

Programs and services that HCS provides include:
  • Mobile dentistry (select schools)
  • Free vision exams and eyeglasses
  • Health education
  • Blood pressure & temperature checks
  • At Health Centers only: Sports/ Comprehensive physicals, Routine immunizations and vaccination record verification, Medication administration, Behavior counseling
